Why did you decide to start your own company?

In June of 2015, after having been in and out of hospitals and specialists offices for almost a year, and having just been laid off from my full-time design job, my life was changed forever. My doctor sat down and told me that they found a rare, pre-cancerous growth in my colon. He then continued to say that had they not removed it, I would’ve been dead in ten years … I pause because everytime I say or write that, it’s still as surreal and shocking as it was the day I heard it.

So, that day in June, that’s when I decided I had literally nothing to lose, dropped my excuses, and went after my dream of running a successful small business. And thus, Type A Invitations was born.

I have been making custom invitations and stationery for over 6 years. It’s the thing my family and friends always told me “I needed to do.” So in June 2015, with nothing to lose and an overwhelming realization of how short life is, I made Type A a reality. Ever since, my business has just continued to get busier, stronger, and more exciting each day.

How did you come up with the name of your company?

I brainstormed with family and friends for about 3 weeks. I needed my business name to represent myself, my tribe, and my work. Type A Invitations came about from a fleeting thought my mom had before falling asleep. Knowing she probably wouldn’t remember it in the morning, she started text it to me and found it waiting to be sent when she woke up. When she sent it to me, I fell in love because it works perfectly on so many different levels. Type A for personality, quality, and ethic. A for Ashleigh. Type for typography and type itself.

What is your favorite part about what you do?

I love meeting so many interesting and cool people and I love being able to bring their vision to life even if they don’t even know what it is.

Do you have a favorite story related to your business?

I asked one of my clients how she found me. She told me she Googled “DC’s most creative invitations” and I was at the top of the list. Hearing that was a really cool moment.

Do you have a favorite type of event?

I love weddings where the bride and groom are really making it true to themselves and have unique elements that make their day truly special.

Is there anything you’d like our readers to know about you personally?

Personally…I’m recently engaged to a badass named Brian. I have a dangerously beautiful tabby named Aroara. I love drawing faces, eating chocolate, and reading fiction. And I play defense for the DCLC First Ladies Lacrosse team.
