If you’re fortunate enough to be one of the growing numbers of people who either work from home or are frequenting your home office, then you know it’s not all that it’s cracked up to be from the outside.

It’s easy to lack motivation, get sidetracked, or even to know when to stop when you have no set start or end time and are surrounded by a variety of other chores demanding your attention.

Here are a few things that you can do in order to work your best from home:

Organized space

There is nothing more stressful or hindering your work than a cluttered office/workspace. If you have a collection of mail, old projects, and stacks on stacks of miscellaneous items it might be in your best interest to clean out your space to hold the minimum of everything you need in order to maximize your personal productivity.

Limited distractions

It is so hard to work from home and not be distracted by the many other things that you need to get done – or just want to do. A good way to keep distractions at bay is to give yourself an ‘office’ space where you know you focus solely on work and you will eventually turn that into a mental habit where you step into work mode and leave all other thoughts behind in order to crank it out.

Set yourself a “work” time and structure your hours

One of the biggest challenges of working from home is knowing when to start and when to stop. Unlike going to an office your days aren’t structured for you so you need to give yourself your own structure. Start early and give yourself a designated work time in the morning and afternoon that best fits your schedule and stick to it. It will also help you relax stress-free knowing that you’ve completed your designated hours for the day.

Lunch break

Don’t be afraid to schedule breaks into your day. You’re going to get burnt out and distracted by everything if you don’t have time to yourself for a little while. One of the best things that you can do is to schedule a lunch/coffee break which will not only give you a break but will also give you something to work towards.

Get out of the house when you need to

You do not want to develop home fever where you feel like you’re going crazy as you go straight from your workday to cooking dinner to waking up and starting it all over again. Some days take your workday to a local coffee shop or park if the weather’s nice and get out of the house for a little while.

Interact with others

Working from home has the potential to be a little isolated feeling as you lack the face-to-face interaction that most other employees get to experience. Make an effort to get lunch with someone during your workday or ask another friend with a similar job to meet you at a coffee shop for the afternoon. If it’s hard to incorporate socializing time during your day, make plans for the weekend with friends or family so you have something you know you’re looking forward to.
