Why did you decide to start your own company?
I started my own company a year and a half ago. I got the idea after giving each of my bridesmaids a watercolor portrait of herself. I found such joy in painting the portraits for my friends, I decided to go out on a limb and turn it into a business. I always had a desire to be an entrepreneur and art was my first love, so marrying the two was a dream come true. I started with watercolor portraits, but as other requests came in, I found that I loved creating wedding designs and stationery for my clients. I enjoy telling a couple’s story through illustration, from portraits to bespoke invitations, wedding crests to hand painted wedding maps.
How did you come up with the name of your company?
I didn’t get too creative with my company name. It is just my first and last name.
What is your favorite part about what you do?
My favorite part of the job is learning about my clients’ stories and then working with them to share it through illustration and design. I’m amazed by how much a couple’s personalities come through in the colors they choose, fonts, and even the wording on an invitation. It’s rewarding to look at a set of custom invitations and see their story reflected in it.
Do you have a memorable story related to your business?
A memorable moment in my business was when one of my business school professors commissioned a painting from me. She was a tough but excellent professor, and someone I admired for her knowledge and integrity in business. When she became a client, it was my opportunity to not only create great art for her but also a chance to demonstrate the lessons I learned from her in how I conduct business as a professional.
Do you have a favorite type of event?
My favorite type of events are weddings. I love creating custom invitation suites for weddings.
Is there anything you’d like our readers to know about you personally?
My other passion/love are animals, so I paint pet portraits as well. Animal welfare is a cause close to my heart. I strive in my art to help others see the beauty of wildlife and encourage the preservation of the natural world. I also work with many D.C. animal rescues in their fundraising efforts.
Do you have a team or do you work solo?
I work solo, but partner with great vendors in the D.C. area. I enjoy working with people I have come to know and trust, and I like supporting businesses whose ethos I value.
