Rachel Lane is a freelance makeup artist located in the DC area, providing airbrush + traditional makeup artistry for bridal, boudoir, editorial, and special events! Rachel is all about bringing to confidence to her clients, which we LOVEEE. About three years ago, she said bye bye to the corporate world and hello to makeup artistry and has been pursuing her passion ever since with no regrets! You go girl!

Why did you decide to start your own company?

I started my business after years of working corporate jobs. I wanted to be my own boss. While still working in the corporate world, I volunteered as a makeup artist for Baltimore Help Portrait and fell in love with the transformation process. A little over 3 years ago my fiancé encouraged me to pursue makeup artistry based off my knowledge of, and frustrations with, the consumer side of the industry. I haven’t looked back!

I am mostly self-taught artist, but I’ve also had the privilege to have been under the tutelage of:

Astonish Magazine editor & celebrity makeup artist | Ashley Gomila
Veteran editorial & internationally known hairstylist | Gwendolyn Sneed

In addition to classes, which I plan to continue taking throughout my career, I spend time assisting and learning from other makeup artists and hairstylists who inspire me. Those jobs have included wedding hair and makeup artists here in the DMV and a few editorial jobs up in NYC.

How did you come up with the name of your company?

I wanted to give my business a name that would fall under the KISS rule (keep it simple, stupid!). So I went with my name and what I do!

What is your favorite part about what you do?

As with many artists in my field, I fell in love with helping people feel good about themselves! I want you to feel your best and most beautiful, I believe that sort of confidence allows you to go out and succeed! I get giddy when my clients can’t stop looking in the mirror after sitting in my chair.

Is there anything you’d like our readers to know about you personally?

Don’t judge a book by its cover! My hair color(s) change…a lot and I often wear black (sort of comes with the trade). I’d like your readers to know this: just because I wear the rainbow on my head, doesn’t mean I’m going to paint it on your face (unless you’re into that sort of thing and request it)! I am fully capable of creating classic beauty looks for a timeless bride.
