Why did you decide to start your own company?

My company started from the love and passion I had for creating memorable experiences for people. Life is all about our memories and experiences and that’s what Muddling Memories is all about. We want to bring people back to a very happy place or moment in time that made them smile or feel good. Our cocktails invoke all the senses (smell, sight, taste, sound and touch). The best compliment I can receive from someone is ‘this drink reminds me of”. Having 15 years in client services, I wanted to take my skills and apply it to a hospitality setting. To be honest, bartending was the first position I applied for after leaving my cushy job in finance 5 years ago. I ran home and went on Youtube as soon as I got hired and started searching “how to bartend.” Two days later I was behind the bar and making drinks. Muddling Memories has been in business for over 3 years now and we keep growing by the day. We have worked with some amazing clients and we look forward to constantly pushing the boundaries of what a cocktail can be and how to engage the guests and offer a one of a kind experience.

How did you come up with the name of your company?

I LOVE anagrams. I just find it is easy to remember and also rolls off the tongue really well. I wanted something that spoke to both what we do and what we offer. However, the name has two meanings. Muddling can be both the act of breaking down fruit, herbs or sugar, but also that feeling you have after a few really good drinks. And “Memories” speaks for itself as we leave a lasting impression with any of our bars creations. We want your guests to be talking about the drinks at your event long after it’s over.

What is your favorite part about what you do?

Instant gratification! We are kind of like magicians in the sense of we are creating something special and building up to the reveal. The look on someone’s face when they see one of our drinks come out or when they taste it and you see them smile is the best feeling in the world. We pride ourselves on a very interactive experience from the moment you step to our bar to the second you walk away. Our bartenders are engaging and charming and watching them works is like art in the flesh. Why should we only get joy out of a great dish or meal and the cocktail is an after thought?! We want to bring drinks to the forefront and have you look forward to the cocktail making its way into your hand the same way your dish lands on your table.

Do you have a favorite story related to your business?

I have many, but if I had to choice just one, I would say it was the time I created a cocktail for Beyoncé, backstage at the Global Citizen‘s concert. I had won a cocktail contest and the prize was to serve my drink backstage for 1200 VIPS. Being in hospitality, you don’t often get starstruck because it’s second nature to work with a diverse group of people and events. However, to have someone who is that influential to tell you that your drink is one of the best she has ever had is pretty amazing and humbling. Another one of my favorite stories is when we did a wedding for about 400 people. We created these really amazing low proof shots that had liquid nitrogen in them. We had a group of about 50 people rush to the bar and all take a shot. The drink created this amazing fog because of the cold temperature. I wish I had my camera handy because it looked like a bar full of fire breathing dragons.

Do you have a favorite type of event?

We love all events. They each bring their own unique feeling and theme which we can always cater to of course. Each event is special to the client so we handle them all the same. Weddings are fun for the fact that people want to really let loose and have a good time. They tend to drink a bit more so our bars offer a fun variety of options and we also will sit down with the bride and groom to create a signature cocktail(s) based around their taste profiles. We found that couples tend to really focus on TWO main factors at a wedding which is WHAT FOOD SHOULD WE HAVE and DJ OR BAND? The bar tends to get neglected and we found that no one was really offering many options outside of the standard bar options and mixed drinks. We wanted to create something where the bride and groom get excited about having a third element that is on par or even better than the food and music. We wanted to raise the bar for your experience at an event and I believe we have done so. Other events like birthdays, religious celebrations, cooperate events, bachelorette and bachelor parties are also a lot of fun. We like to work with a theme and really run with it. We offer not just bars but also walk around drink options like bar carts, pre-bottled cocktails, and table side made to order drinks. We also offer a large variety of non-alcoholic options which look and feel like a craft cocktail but without the booze.

Is there anything you’d like our readers to know about you personally?

I really truly mean it when I say “love what you do and you will never work again”. That is how I feel every day as I get to work with amazing clients and I couldn’t have asked for a better team. I have always been an artist and to be able to create both something that is not only enjoyable but also will have a lasting impression is any artists dream. While my art doesn’t last for more than a few mins, the memory, and feeling you had when having it will. I had a former life in finance and real estate and left the cushy corporate world to follow my passion in hospitality. First and foremost I always want the guest to feel welcomed and excited to be at our bars. I only hire bartenders who know how to smile first and then say hello. I am also a huge component of using the best ingredients and creating unique flavors thru handmade syrups, fresh juices, and tinctures. We source as local as possible and organic when available.

Do you have a team or do you work solo?

I do have a team of the most sought after bartenders, mixologist and sommeliers around. They work at some of the best cocktail and wine bars in NYC. We are also hiring other bartenders from all around the country to expand our reach and network of talented staff.
