Why did you decide to start your own company?
I founded J’Adorn Designs in early 2012 as handcrafted jewelry shop with a branch dedicated to custom bridal work. It was originally a labor of love – a creative outlet while searching for new jobs in a new city – but over time, it grew into a legitimate business enterprise as I refined my craft, took business classes online, and eventually identified my ideal clientele and niche in the market. I’ve been running J’Adorn Designs full time for exactly one year, and I haven’t looked back once. Even on the hardest days, being my own boss and creating beautiful accessories to honor women in a tangible way is a worthwhile endeavor.
How did you come up with the name of your company?
I have a background in foreign languages (I majored in German in college and also know a bit of French, Spanish, and Italian), and this part of me definitely came out during my brainstorm for business names! “J’Adorn” is a word I devised to describe the heart of what I do. “J’Adore” is French for, “I love” or “I adore”, and “adorn” obviously means to decorate, accessorize, or embellish. Combining the two words created a memorable name that expresses the beauty, love, and romance that I seek to convey in my work.
What is your favorite part about what you do?
The most rewarding part of my work is that specific moment – that spark – when I first meet or talk to a client who really resonates with something that I’ve made! Being told, “this is exactly what I was looking for” or, “I’m so glad I found your shop,” is the utmost compliment to a maker like me. My custom design process takes this a step further by creating a piece from scratch specifically for an individual client, so I really get to know that person and ensure that what I’ve made is something they love.
Do you have a favorite story related to your business?
I just finished my first ever presentation at Bridal Fashion Week in New York at The Couture Show, which is hosted by The Knot. Being there and having the opportunity to show my line to retailers and press from the international wedding community was an amazing milestone for my small business, and one I worked very hard to reach. My proudest moment during the show was when one of my new hair combs received the award for Editor’s Pick!
Is there anything you’d like our readers to know about you personally?
I have a great respect for love, be it between a romantic couple, friends, siblings, parents, or anyone else. Relationships are what make life meaningful and worthwhile, and a big part of why I create accessories specifically for weddings & special occasions is because these are the moments when we tend to express our love for one another. By creating jewelry in honor of a wedding, anniversary, new child, or other special events, that experience becomes crystallized into a tangible reminder that the recipient can wear and be reminded of that beautiful moment in time.
