Meet Erik Dreyer, one of the co-founders of Goodshuffle!

We hope you all had a chance to meet both Erik and Andrew at our Vendor Social a few weeks ago. If you didn’t, you kinda missed out. Not totally, though, because you’ll get to read all about the guys and their totally rad business, Goodshuffle!

Goodshuffle is a website that makes renting pretty much everything you could ever want for your party, wedding, graduation, conferences, even festivals and community events! Need table clothes? No problem! How about an old typewriter or antique decanters? They’ve got ’em!

Their goal? To make your life easy when throwing or planning – well, anything! And, did we hear someone say budget-friendly? UM, YES! These guys have gone above and beyond to keep their products very reasonably priced. Frankly, we were impressed.

When did you decide you wanted to open your own company?     

Andrew and I love to solve challenging problems with technology. We launched Goodshuffle after having our own small rental company here in the DMV. We realized there was a discovery and procurement gap within the industry that we were uniquely qualified to solve.

What services does your company offer?

Goodshuffle is a marketplace for event and party supply rentals. We help renters (event planners, coordinators, and DIYers) discover and rent the items they need to throw a successful event. We think you should be able to get inspired (Pinterest-style) and shop at the same time. Whether it’s a large canopy for a client, radio headsets for your day-of team, or that perfect tufted mint sofa, we’ll help you find it—and rent it!

How did you come up with the name of your business?                 

Unfortunately, we all fight the “is the URL available?” battle. So, when our first 100 ideas were not available, Goodshuffle came about by combining two words: “Goods” meaning items, things, tangibles; and “Shuffle” meaning to move, to arrange.

How long have you been in business?         

We launched the new version of Goodshuffle in February of 2016, but we have been working on our business and refining our concept since January of 2013.

What is your favorite part about what you do?           

Andrew and I love to solve problems — we’re tech guys with a knack for developing product, but we typically run in the tech circle. The best part of our job is visiting different vendors around the DMV. Getting to understand the story behind each business, each founder, and each rental item has been inspiring, eye opening and really helps us understand what we’re building and who we represent.

Do you have a favorite story related to your business?                

We call it the “Prayer Hands” moment. After we ran a beta test in the summer of 2015 to determine whether our idea would work, we sat down with some professional event-planner friends to show them what we wanted to build. Over lunch on 14th Street, we demoed the product. Afterward, one of them clasped his hands together, looked us in the eyes and said, “Please, please build this. It’s going to make my life so much easier.” That moment sticks with us because it both articulates the wonderful support we’ve had from this community and demonstrates to us how valuable our solution could really be for our customers.

Do you have a favorite type of event?        

We are big fans of theme parties. We both love the ability to embrace an era, style or concept and run with it. Andrew frequently hosts themed boat parties on the Potomac, and my wife threw me a Gatsby-inspired birthday party not too long ago.

Is there anything else you’d like our readers to know about your business?   

Goodshuffle is focused on building technology and providing world-class customer service. When a bride uses our website to rent something for her wedding, it becomes our top priority. We know how important that day is, and we take our job seriously. Additionally, we proactively work with vendors to understand their business and their story so that we can do our very best in showcasing them to the world.

Is there anything you’d like our readers to know about you personally?          

I suppose it’s that we try very hard to maintain a sense of humility and openness when listening to the renters and vendors on our website. Our goal is to create a pleasant and time-saving shopping experience for the renter and to get all of the information in the vendor’s hands so they can provide excellent service. The only way to do that is to listen carefully to our customers. Often times we tell people “Ok, now honestly, what did you hate?” and we want to hear that kind of feedback from your readers as they first begin to shop on Goodshuffle. We are constantly improving the product based on our customers’ input, so we definitely want to hear from you!
