Capture Your Pet's Personality through Drawing and Watercolor Techniques

Learn how to draw your pet like an artist by utilizing simple shapes and easy-to-understand techniques! (beginners – advanced welcome)
About this Event

We get it. It takes years of practice and trial-and-error to learn the best ways to capture personality and realism in pet portraits.
But, did you know what’s most important in a pet portrait is HOW you capture the personality and unique traits, not your exact illustrative style?
Get all the basic tips and tricks that you can use again and again, building your skills into a specific art toolkit.

This workshop is open to everyone — from beginners to advanced levels. Everyone will be able to use these simple, actionable steps to create a lovely work of art!

We’ll begin by learning to draw our pets with Kelsey’s super-approachable style!

  • You’ll walk away from this interactive workshop able to…
  • Simplify any photo into basic shapes for sketching
  • Look for details that will help you add personality to a drawing
  • Learn the critical focal points when drawing animals
  • Practice your sketching and line work skills
  • Understand the differences between illustration and realism
  • Prepare sketches for watercolor painting

“I had an amazing experience getting custom drawings of my dog. Everything turned out better than I had expected. From the drawings to the stickers/cards/magnets, I couldn’t say enough good things about how wonderful my experience has been or the high degree of quality of the final product.” – Melissa H.

Then, we’ll move on to how to paint your pet: with Kelsey’s simple tricks for watercolor portraits

Meet Kelsey!
Kelsey Weir is a full-time artist living outside Philadelphia, PA, with her Frenchie Indy, chinchilla Bandit, and foster parakeets Pancake and Waffle. Kelsey enjoys spending time with her family, rescuing animals, traveling, reading, and eating baked goods.

“I love to paint my favorite things, which often means I paint dogs a lot. Indy – my adorable Frenchie assistant – doesn’t mind. In fact, I think it’s inflated her ego. Luckily she’s cute. Each day, I try to create something meaningful with my art. Sometimes it’s serious, most of the time it’s nonsense.”

As an artist, Kelsey spends most of her time painting pet portraits and patterns for clients all over the globe.

Kelsey also runs the fundraising campaign Prints for Paws, which has raised over $20,000 for French Bulldog Village, a Frenchie rescue based in the United States.

Kelsey makes a living as a professional artist, yet has no formal training – Kelsey is completely self-taught and wants to share her skills with you!

“I had the pleasure of working with Kelsey on the Prints for Paws fundraiser. She painted my French Bulldogs, Murphy and Valentina, with watercolor, and created an incredibly unique and fun pattern using the beautiful paintings. She has such a great eye for style and the colors she uses are so lovely and vibrant. She captured their personalities perfectly. I was blown away by her attention to detail and artistic style. The level of detail is flawless! Kelsey takes tremendous care in every piece she creates. She is absolutely lovely to work with and so kind.”

“Kelsey is such a great artist to work with. We love her fun and whimsical style. She has been able to impeccably capture our pups’ personalities through her art! The likeness is uncanny and we treasure the portraits she’s done of Luna & Hogan.”
