Life is full of shifts, transitions, adjustments, modifications, developments, and transformations.
They occur daily as a normal and inevitable fact of life.
Many changes are so small that you don’t even notice them.
This week, Maryann Udell, founder and CEO of Sheltering Tree, is guiding us through her process to help guide you through change.
When you go through major transitions, more attention is required.
You might attempt to sidestep change. After all, there is a level of comfort and security in the old ways. However, change is essential to evolve and survive.
Change Process
In order to process and get through change there are four general steps to guide you.
Keep in mind that each individual works through this process differently and it takes time. So be patient and kind with yourself and others.
1. Acknowledge your feelings
2. Accept your new reality
3. Adjust your focus
4. Take action
To help you understand how to manage each part of the process, here’s a bit more explanation.
Acknowledge your feelings – No matter what you’re feeling about the change, you need to get it out of your system and express it. Ignored feelings do not go away. If you bury your emotions, there are a number of problems that can emerge – depression, addiction, emotional outbursts, health issues and more. Release the steam from the pressure cooker before it explodes.
Accept your new reality – The old ways are in the past and you have to learn to exist with the new reality. While it’s possible to learn from the past, you cannot turn back the clock and live there. You need to accept and adapt to your new reality.
Adjust your focus – Pay attention to your personal strengths and determine how to use the knowledge you possess in a positive way. If you hear a complaint in your head, think about possible improvements that could be made. Offer a suggestion on how to solve the problem. Determine how you can be part of the solution.
Take action – Every day do the best you can with the tasks at hand. Be proactive.
Ask for Help
No matter where you are in this process, ask for and accept help when you need it.
You can reach out to a friend, a family member, a co-worker, a trusted mentor, or Maryann.
Maryann is leading a workshop with District Bliss, 4 Steps to Navigating Change, on November 11, 2023, at 1pm ET / 10am PT.

This blog post was authored by the amazing Maryann Udel, founder and CEO of Sheltering Tree and District Bliss Member.
I was 24 when my husband was killed in an automobile accident. Overnight, I went from being a young wife to a young widow. From deeply in love to lost in grief. Family and friends were all very supportive but, ultimately, I had to figure out how to move myself forward and reclaim my life.
Through years of discovery and exploration, I found it is possible to live, love, laugh, and find joy again after loss. And I’ve made it my mission to help others who are experiencing massive transitions know that they’re not alone, and to help them reconnect with their life.
When you’re dealing with loss, or another big life transition or setback, it can make you want to shut down and isolate yourself. At Sheltering Tree, we help you put the life back in your life, and get you started on your next chapter. Schedule a call with Maryann and find out how you can get started now.
If you or a loved one needs help, or you’d like to know more about the programs we offer at Sheltering Tree, schedule a time to chat.
