Meet Confexion Connexion!

We met Michelle, the head chef behind The Confexion Connexion, and immediately loved her. She’s warm and sweet – just like her goodies! We are THRILLED she’s one of the Participating Vendors for our September Vendor Social!

What made you decide to open your own company?

I have always wanted to my own food establishment, ever since I can remember. Throughout the years it has had many faces, names, and flavor profiles. I was always discouraged by the financial risk and the fear of failure. In 2014, I finally decided that I didn’t want to be that person who never went after their dreams because they were too afraid to try. So, I started researching different commissary kitchens and food incubators in the DC Metro area and I found Union Kitchen in NE DC. Once I reached out to them my dream became a reality and I haven’t looked back since!

What was the inspiration behind the name The Confexion Connexion?

One of my goals is to connect people in the community to gourmet confections in a fun and approachable way; I chose The Confexion Connexion because it truly represents my company and my mission. I decided to spell it differently because it reflects my style of food, which uses familiar flavors but experienced in a different way.

We know you have a team that supports you in the kitchen. Could you tell us a little bit about them?

My husband, Jared, is my partner in crime in life and in the kitchen. He has supported me every step of the way! Throughout the trials and tribulations of starting and operating my own business, Jared has been endlessly supportive. He is my IT guy when the printer or computer are not working, too! He is my sous chef in the kitchen, my roadie at farmers’ markets and festivals, and my cheerleader when I need to rally.

What is your favorite part of being an executive chef and business owner?

My favorite part of running my own business is the ability to have creative freedom. I love being inspired by different flavor combinations and redefining them into my specialties to create something familiar yet unexpected. It is really rewarding to see someone light up when they bite into one of my confections and truly enjoy the experience.

Do you have a favorite memory you’d like to share with us?

My favorite memory is of the first time we ever did an event, the Kingman Island Bluegrass Festival last April. We had no clue what to expect or how much product to make. What made it great was that my husband and his brother were there to support me and the business. It made going through the uncertainty, the unknown, and the whole process less scary; there is a huge learning curve and having an amazing support system made it more bearable. Overall, it was great to have the event be almost like a family affair and to feel the love at our first event as a small business.

What is your favorite type of event?

My favorite type of event is a festival because you are there meeting the people who are coming up to enjoy your food. I love being able to talk to them, get their feedback, and suggestions. It’s a wonderful and inspiring experience!
