When and how was the idea of Stanton and Greene born?
Stanton and Greene is the brainchild of Jared Rager and Eli Hengst, owners of longtime Capitol Hill staple Sonoma Restaurant and Wine Bar, and August Paro, a contributing partner to Beuchert’s Saloon. With Stanton and Greene, they hoped to offer a classic cocktail bar with a pre-war feel, and surprising takes on a classic American gastropub menu, for the closely knit Capitol Hill community.
Was there a specific reason for the location choice?
As with Sonoma, Stanton and Greene is first and foremost a neighborhood restaurant, that highlights the diversity and history of Capitol Hill. After ten years of celebrating wine at Sonoma, the Stanton and Greene team hope to celebrate cocktails the old fashioned way in the heart of our nation’s capitol.
What is the story behind the beautiful decor choices?
Our interior space designer and part-owner, August Paro, thoughtfully chose materials and fabrics for the restaurant that would lend an authentically pre-war feeling to the space. The first floor mosaic tiles and leather banquette remind us of a time when cocktails were slung with precision, whether they happened to be legal at the time or not. The upstairs loft bar, with its dramatic art deco feel and handmade lighting accents also harkens back to an earlier era in DC. The exposed whitewashed brick is original, and cedar planked walls were finished by hand.
What is your ultimate goal with Stanton and Greene?
We want every guest at Stanton and Greene to feel they have a home on Capitol Hill, where the couches are plush, the meal is hearty, and the drinks are ice-cold. It’s both the perfect place to celebrate a special occasion, or to relax after a hard day of lobbying.
What type of weddings + events does Stanton and Greene offer? How can we book an event in this gorgeous space?
We welcome private events of all shapes and sizes, from small corporate dinners, to large family celebrations, in our upstairs loft. The beautifully renovated second floor at Stanton and Greene is ideal for larger standing cocktail receptions, with a soaring ceiling, art deco bar, and plenty of dancing room. If you are looking for a unique wedding celebration, our staff is happy to customize our event menus to create the perfect event. Check out our events kit on our website, or contact our events manager, Hilary Smith, directly at email@example.com.
