How was your experience at the DIY Workshop?

It was awesome! I didn’t really know what to expect, but everything about it was fun; if it was a challenge, it was exciting. If it was easy, it was fun. There were so many options that it was difficult to choose – and I loved everything everyone else created so much that I kind of wish I could take everything home haha

-Sara, Boss Lady/Co-Founder

The DB DIY Décor Workshop with AR Workshop was really fun! For me, it was a difficult decision in terms of what I wanted to create because of the number of options that were available. Since District Bliss does work with many small businesses within the DMV area,  we wanted the option for these businesses to create their business logos on their projects. Katie Nguyen, the owner of AR Workshop, was really great to work with. From start to finish, she was so accommodating and provided so many different suggestions to everyone in our group for ways to create our project. It was a three hour class which seems a little daunting but because everyone was talking with each other, it went by so fast. Plus, AR Workshop has a little shop you can peruse around while you’re waiting for your project to dry, which is a great added bonus when taking the workshop!
We can’t wait to work with Katie again for hopefully a next DIY Workshop!
– Cassie, DIY Blissbassador

I started out overwhelmed by choosing what project to do and not being a DIY kind of gal I was worried I might be overwhelmed all night. My need for rules and control also gets in the way of me enjoying  crafts (wow, I sound SO fun!!)! However, none of that was the case! I was given exactly enough instruction not to get overwhelmed and I had lots of rules to follow so I could make it exactly like it was supposed to look! There  is no chance of you coming away with a Pinterest fail! Phew! It was fun with little stress over messing up! I loved it!

Tracy, DC Blissbassador

This was a really enjoyable class, where everyone had the opportunity to create a unique piece for their home. I really enjoyed the hands on aspect of it all and how you got to build your piece from unfinished pieces of wood. I chose the round lazy susan with a monogram and my last name because I wanted a timeless piece that would work with a wide range of decor in my home.  In addition to the design of the lazy susan being universal, I choose a more neutral stain & paint combination, too. There were so many amazing color choices, this part was the hardest for me!
What I really liked about this unique DIY workshop experience is that it’s something you could easily do solo or with a group of friends, coworkers, family, etc.  I’m excited to continue spreading the word about AR and signing up for classes in the future!

-Brittany, VA Blissbassador

Unfortunately, I couldn’t be there but I’m so glad the team had a great time! The workshop looked like so much fun! Crafting with friends is always 100x more fun!

-Melanie, Assistant + Unicorn

RECAP ALERT! Shaughn White & Co. taught us how to be our own handymen!

We love being able to team up with DC friendors to help bring the DMV fun + crafty + informative DIY workshops!

Shaughn & Co., a local realtor company here in the DMV area, offered a free DIY Workshop which involved repairing + installing drywall. The event was held in Petworth at Annie’s Ace Hardware!

Both Shaughn & Co. and the staff at Ace Hardware were incredible to work with! A mix of 20 people attended the workshop: some were residents of the neighborhood, word of mouth, and District Bliss.
Three different stations were set up to demonstrate how to install drywall on a small, medium, and large sized hole. Each demonstration took about 35 – 45 minutes which allowed attendees to rotate to each station and being able to install the drywall themselves. It was a very great and well attended event and the attendees seem to really enjoy the workshop!

Thank you so much to Shaughn & Co. and Annie’s Ace Hardware for leading + hosting this DIY workshop to help teach the community a super handy skill! Say bye-bye to those pesky holes and nicks in the wall!

Stay tuned to see what DIY workshop we’ll announce next! If you’re interested in being a workshop leader, click here.

Capture your true self! Photos from the Harty is sharing their tips on how to look your best for portraits!

Can’t figure out what to wear to take that picture perfect portrait? Photos from the Harty is sharing their tips + tricks on how to look your best for the camera!

Professional Portraits, Headshots, Color Palettes

One of the most challenging parts of getting portraits taken is choosing your outfit. Photos from the Harty is asked this question frequently, so they thought they would share some tips with you all!

Headshots

There are many different types of headshots. We are all unique! When having headshots taken, it’s important to think about how you would like to represent your business. For example, if you are working in the real estate market, the photograph below is the perfect background!

Photos from the Harty

Creative Headshots

If you are in a creative business, you may want something that shows a bit more of your personality. As photographers, it’s important that you know our personalities; you want to know that you’ll be comfortable with us. So, we often use this “headshot” for Photos from the Harty. That being said, we also have other options, like the image on the right.

Photos from the Harty

General guidelines for portraits

Solid fabrics or simple patterns generally work best

Your clothing should not have distracting patterns, text, or logos.  You want your face to be the focal point, not your shirt.

Photos from the Harty
Photos from the Harty

Statement jewelry is distracting

Unless you are getting your portrait taken to sell your new jewelry line, steer clear of statement pieces.  They draw the viewer’s eye.

Photos from the Harty

Dark clothing and long sleeves tends to slenderize

The “skinny arm” pose is for snapshots, not professional portraits.  While it’s very important to choose something that flatters your body type, it’s pretty crucial that you are comfortable. If you are uncomfortable, it can be evident in your images.

Be consistent

When posing with more than one person – such as for an engagement shoot, family portrait session, or even a group at the office – try not to mix too many patterns or competing colors (like complimentary colors — red-green, blue-orange, purple-yellow, etc).

Photos from the Harty

Think about your setting

You want your outfit to work with the natural environment, not detract from or clash with it. If are indoors, think about the coloring in walls, decor, etc. You want to avoid clashing with those colors.

Photos from the Harty

Professional headshots should be just that – professional

If you’re having headshots taken for business purposes, dress professionally. Avoid sheer materials without anything underneath, low necklines, etc. You want to represent what a model employee would look like for your company.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions!

You’re hiring a professional for a reason.  Trust your photographer – and ask us questions!  We will happily help you; we want you to look your best! 🙂

Example Color Palettes for having your photograph taken

Here are some color palettes.  You do not need to stick to these by any means.  They are simply examples:

Becoming a blogger? Elizabeth Carberry taught us the key steps to beginning our blogs and documenting our lives!

Elizabeth Carberry, founder of ArtSee, is not your average blogger

After reading an article about the importance of documenting your life, Elizabeth began her blog, ecarberry.com, for herself. The idea of the article was not necessarily about traditional journaling, but rather an encouragement to simply remember the little things; it was a reminder to document in your life through writing in some capacity. So, believing that sharing her work, interests, personality and pieces of life is important to her brand, she decided to tell her story through blogging when she launched her website.

Elizabeth asked Mary Elizabeth Creative to join us, since she had recently started a blog. We were very lucky that she shared additional insight to support and elaborate on the important aspects of starting a blog.

We asked her to lead a District Bliss DIY Workshop so she could share the knowledge and insight she has been gathering over the years. She began by asking us to write down four words that we’d be answering over the course of the workshop: why, how, where, and what.

What inspires us?

What do you want to write about? What else is out there like yours?

We listed blogs that we like, follow, enjoy the aesthetics of, or are interested in. We discussed what we like about these blogs, how we would describe them, and how we found them.

Everyone is different, so it’s important to know what inspires each of us. What we are drawn to tells us a lot about our style and what inspires us.

Be sure to do your research!

Like any business, or really anything you do in life, start with research. Be sure to do deliberate research. Spend time looking through InstagramFacebook, etc. and find blogs or people that publish that interest you – ask yourself why they interest you, what they write about, etc. Write it down, document it, keep it somewhere, and refer back to it periodically so you remember your goals.

Some things to consider:

– Topic

– Writing Style

– Design Aesthetic

– Visuals

District Bliss

Why do we want to start a blog?

We discussed why Elizabeth called this workshop Not your average blogger because she was not blogging to increase revenue or draw attention to her brand. So, why do we want to start a blog?

Each person has a different goal when starting a blog. Do we want to enhance our business? Make a living? Share our stories? Post our recommendations? Each of these topics or styles has value, but start at a very different place.

Elizabeth asked us to think about the name of our blogs. How does it represent us? Our business? Our goals? Our topics? What draws us to this name?

Where should you set up your blog? Which platform works best for you?

What do you need to launch?

Examples: Squarespace (Elizabeth’s preferred hosting platform because it’s easiest to use and most aesthetically pleasing ), Wix, WordPress, GoDaddy, Small Orange, Tumblr, Wordpress

Compare the sites you are looking into with Start Blogging.

FYI: sometimes your hosting platform may differ from your blog platform.

District Bliss

If you have the budget for it, hire someone to make something custom that perfectly fits your vision!

Remember your aesthetic and be sure to pick something that suits your style.

Start with a simple template that is easiest to use; don’t forget to make sure that the platform can include everything you want to share. In most cases, you’ll want to include at least: home, about, blog, contact pages.

Don’t forget to pick a name!

Creating content

– What are you going to write about?

– When and how?

– What is your blog about? Choose your niche!! Be it fashion, art, home, politics, family, food or can be general “lifestyle” – find what interests YOU!

– Know your audience: figure out who you are speaking to and what their likes and dislikes are – is it just your friends, your family, a wider audience interested in the same topics?

Some other questions to consider

Content calendar – here is the hard part: Setting your calendar and sticking to it. Admittedly, Elizabeth struggles to keep up with hers – and so do we, sometimes! It’s nothing to be ashamed of, but it’s definitely best if you can stick to your schedule! Coschedule is a great to tool if you want to be fancy. Otherwise, good ol’ Google Doc works just fine.

Elizabeth is a big fan of Evernote to keep things separate by month in a list.

Before you launch

Create a months worth of content before launching! You want to make sure you have enough content that you are not struggling to keep up when you’re launching your blog! Stay ahead of the game!

new photo-3

Managing your blog

What do you need to maintain your blog?

One thing that is key is what you need to make your blog better – set goals. What are the next steps? Photography? Collaborations? Plan for the future to keep it fun and interesting.

Share your blog

Share your blog on social media with friends, family, and more! You want to announce that your blog and let your desired audience know that you are live1

First and foremost, use the social media platforms that you use most regularly. If you don’t use Instagram, then don’t use it to share your blog. You want to make sure you use the tools that are comfortable for YOU!

If your goal is to have the blog shared widely, ASK – make a business Facebook page, join The Rising Tide Society and District Bliss, integrate your social sharing with your content calendar, are you going to share all posts, some, and when? – Planoly, Hootsuite, Edgar, Later

Call to Action

Be sure to share what you want people to do: Is the call to check out the post? Or the product you’re talking about? Or a partner/collaborator?

But first, coffee. Qualia Coffee will be at our DIY tomorrow serving up a fresh cup of joe!

Meet Qualia Coffee!

Some of us (or most of us) can’t even fathom the thought of a morning without a fresh cup of coffee. That’s where Qualia Coffee comes in. Qualia Coffee, located in Washington D.C., is serving up small batch, micro roast coffee. They roast high quality, single origin, sustainably produced coffee from around the world! Founder, Joel Finkelstein is succeeding in his mission to bring the freshest brew to the District and to farmers markets around the region! Their roastery and cafe is located in Petworth and they have a brand new shop coming soon in Eckington!

We can’t wait to wake up tomorrow for not only a great cup of joe but a DIY! Qualia Coffee will be at our Photography DIY at West Elm DC!

All I really wanted was access to really fresh coffee, and I didn’t have that in Washington. No one was saying when they roasted their coffee, or how they roasted it, or in some cases even where it came from. Honestly, the reason I got into it was there was no shop like the one I eventually opened. Today, we roast our coffee seven days a week, five pounds at a time, at our shop in Petworth. In order to keep about 12 coffees on roast at any given time, all available as beans and by the cup, we are always searching the globe for new coffee, grown to the highest standards of quality, fairness, and sustainability.

8 years in May! Since 2009.

In philosophy, “Qualia” are the indescribable experience of the senses, the idea that aspects of sight, smell, touch and taste are wholly subjective. Coffee offers a complexity of flavor that reflects the hard work and knowledge that goes into growing, harvesting, importing, roasting and brewing it. But ultimately, you will have to experience it for yourself.

Like anyone who is a nerd about anything, we love to share our knowledge and create experiences for others that welcome them into enjoying and appreciating coffee the way that we do. If I can help someone learn something that enriches their experience of what’s in their cup, that’s a good day.

Guided tastings, whether for coffee connoisseurs or newbies, on the road or at our shop, are one of our favorite ways to help people learn by doing, tasting coffees while learning about where they come from, what makes each one special, and what shapes their unique flavor profiles.

Our second shop is opening soon! In addition to our current space in Petworth and at farmers markets around the region, you’ll soon see us in our new storefront in Eckington.
