Happy New Year! Cheers to 2018!

Happy New Year party peeps! We’re a week into 2018 & we hope everyone is having a great start to the new year! Thank you so much for all the support in 2017 and we can’t wait to show you what we have in store for this year! Like all new years, many of us make resolutions or goals that we SWEAR we’re going to stick to. Even if you’re guilty of already breaking that resolution, no worries! Keep on pushing and keep on fighting to reach your goals. So whether it’s eating healthier or getting that dream job, shoot for the stars! Dream big, work hard, and take a chance! Anything is possible.

Read all about what the DB team wants to accomplish this year!

My New Years resolutions:

  1. Spend more time with people that have a positive influence on my life.
  2. Purge unnecessary clutter.
  3. Making time for exercising.
  4. Trying new recipes!

-Brittany, VA Blissbassador

Photos from the Harty

My New Years resolution is always to strive to do better than the year before, whatever that may mean…have more fun, enjoy my work more, work harder, smarter and network more!

-Tracy, DC Blissbassador

To paint the mural in my office and bring the outdoors in! It’s bringing the outside in and it will have sort of a nod to the Great Wave with a combination of abstract combination of water, land/mountains, and clouds/sky!

-Sara, Co-Founder

Chris Ferenzi Photography

My New Years Resolution is to try and stay more present. I think I get over stressed about things that are going to happen in the future or get stuck in the past, which is not healthy for me both physically and mentally. I am hoping to stay more aware with what is currently in front of me and appreciate these instances and people who are there supporting me!

-Cassie, DIY Blissbassador

Chris Ferenzi Photography

My new years resolution is to do more squats, get into grad school (fingers crossed!), and work towards landing my first full-time job!

-Melanie, Assistant + Unicorn

Happy New Year! What are your new years resolutions?

We’re getting all the winter vibes from our DMV Vendor Social! Relive the evening and check out the full gallery!

On December 5th, we kicked off the holiday season with a DMV Vendor Social! The event took place at the cozy DIY boutique, AR Workshop Alexandria, where we were joined by our talented premier vendor, My Sweet Array, and featured vendor CharmCat! Guests got mix + mingle while sipping on some holiday spirits and snacking on delicious homemade treats from My Sweet Array! (Not to mention enjoy the visual satisfaction of their paper floral background)!

CharmCat created all the winter inspired signage including our adorable plaid-patterned name tags! Of course, we couldn’t have a vendor social in a DIY space without a DIY activity! Thanks to our awesome venue, AR Workshop Alexandria, guests got to decorate wooden ornaments with festive pre-made designs to take home for the holidays! Nothing like a little crafting to get into a holiday spirit.

We hope everyone had fun & made some quality connections! A huge thank you to our participating vendors for all your hard work & for making the evening a hit! Now instead of reading about the event, see it for yourself. Our very own Sara Alepin from Photos from the Harty captured all the awesome moments and details! Feel free to share photos on social media and tag us at @districtblissevents and give photo credit to @photosfromhart on Instagram and Twitter, and Photos from the Harty on Facebook. Meet the sweet duo behind My Sweet Array!

Meet My Sweet Array!

Meet Maria Drakos & Irini Zhupa, the sweet sister duo behind My Sweet Array! My Sweet Array offers baking and design services on all things pretty and sweet! They specialize in gourmet dessert buffets and giant paper flower backdrops.

They use organic ingredients and high quality chocolate (YUM!), and support local farms! All their décor elements are designed and hand assembled by their team, and everything is prepared with the outmost love and care.

They’re the perfect team to go to for parties, birthdays, and more! Not to mention, their treats are the perfect gifts for your friends and family with a sweet tooth! They were our amazing premier vendor at our, DMV Vendor Social at AR Workshop Alexandria! Keep on scrolling to read all about Maria & Irini and see mouth-watering pics!

How long have you been in business?

1 year!

Taeck Jang Photography

How did you come up with the name ‘My Sweet Array’?

Coming up with the right name was a big challenge, because our company has such a wide range of services.

Why did you decide to start your own company?

It all started with a passion for cooking and hosting family events. We come from a large and very tight knit Greek family, and there is always some reason to celebrate. Every event had to be bigger and better than the one before, and we quickly fell in love with that process. We each have a diverse background, Irini is a designer and Maria is a baker, so together we had the right balance of skills for this business. Being sisters definitely helps, because we have spend our whole lifetime learning how to get along and work together! There’s really no one else we’d each rather run a business with.

Taeck Jang Photography

Do you have a favorite part of what you do?

The planning stage of every dessert buffet is definitely our favorite part of this process. Coming up with the right combination of delicious treats that will satisfy all tastes, and pairing that up with all the right décor elements is definitely our favorite part!

Do you have a favorite story related to your business that you’d like to share?

Maria was featured on WBOC for a one hour special on her delicious macarons.

Taeck Jang Photography

Is there anything you’d like our readers to know about you personally?

We are both very hardworking mothers (Maria has 3, Irini has 1), so we are constantly trying to find the right balance between work and family.

Taeck Jang Photography

Is there anything else you’d like us to share with our readers?

We offer rentals of our pre-made flower backdrops.

DIY RECAP: DIY Biz Branding + Holiday Decor Workshop with AR Workshop Alexandria!

AR Workshop Alexandria is a boutique DIY Workshop offering hands-on classes for creating custom home decor in a cozy lounge style atmosphere. Customize beautiful signage and home decor with colors and designs of your choice and enjoy a fun and crafty night out! District Bliss DIY got to team up with the talented Katie Nguyen Wells to host a DIY Business Branding + Holiday Decor workshop and it was amazing!

Read all about the experience from the District Bliss team plus check out photos of all the DIY-ers and our rad new decor!

Luckily, we get to return to AR Workshop for our DMV Vendor Social! If you missed out on the DIY, join us December 5th to check out this cute space, mix+mingle, plus participate in a fun mini DIY!

How was your experience at the DIY Workshop?

It was awesome! I didn’t really know what to expect, but everything about it was fun; if it was a challenge, it was exciting. If it was easy, it was fun. There were so many options that it was difficult to choose – and I loved everything everyone else created so much that I kind of wish I could take everything home haha

-Sara, Boss Lady/Co-Founder

The DB DIY Décor Workshop with AR Workshop was really fun! For me, it was a difficult decision in terms of what I wanted to create because of the number of options that were available. Since District Bliss does work with many small businesses within the DMV area,  we wanted the option for these businesses to create their business logos on their projects. Katie Nguyen, the owner of AR Workshop, was really great to work with. From start to finish, she was so accommodating and provided so many different suggestions to everyone in our group for ways to create our project. It was a three hour class which seems a little daunting but because everyone was talking with each other, it went by so fast. Plus, AR Workshop has a little shop you can peruse around while you’re waiting for your project to dry, which is a great added bonus when taking the workshop!
We can’t wait to work with Katie again for hopefully a next DIY Workshop!
– Cassie, DIY Blissbassador

I started out overwhelmed by choosing what project to do and not being a DIY kind of gal I was worried I might be overwhelmed all night. My need for rules and control also gets in the way of me enjoying  crafts (wow, I sound SO fun!!)! However, none of that was the case! I was given exactly enough instruction not to get overwhelmed and I had lots of rules to follow so I could make it exactly like it was supposed to look! There  is no chance of you coming away with a Pinterest fail! Phew! It was fun with little stress over messing up! I loved it!

Tracy, DC Blissbassador

This was a really enjoyable class, where everyone had the opportunity to create a unique piece for their home. I really enjoyed the hands on aspect of it all and how you got to build your piece from unfinished pieces of wood. I chose the round lazy susan with a monogram and my last name because I wanted a timeless piece that would work with a wide range of decor in my home.  In addition to the design of the lazy susan being universal, I choose a more neutral stain & paint combination, too. There were so many amazing color choices, this part was the hardest for me!
What I really liked about this unique DIY workshop experience is that it’s something you could easily do solo or with a group of friends, coworkers, family, etc.  I’m excited to continue spreading the word about AR and signing up for classes in the future!

-Brittany, VA Blissbassador

Unfortunately, I couldn’t be there but I’m so glad the team had a great time! The workshop looked like so much fun! Crafting with friends is always 100x more fun!

-Melanie, Assistant + Unicorn

Thank you Katie for being an amazing workshop leader!

We’re fallin for fall! Check out District Bliss’ favorite things about autumn!

For a while, we were pretty unsure whether or not fall was actually going to happen for us in the district, but finally, the weather is cooling down and we’re able to bust out cozy flannels and boots and watch as the leaves change colors. Fall has so many wonderful things to offer so we asked our team what their favorite things about this season are!

I love football, the mild temperatures, and the colors of the leaves as they change. I love soft socks and warm blankets, cuddling with my new puppy who is just learning what colder weather feels like and is continually confused when he steps out the door, and spending time with friends and family.

-Sara

My favorite things about fall is the brisk weather, cozy scarves and blankets, fall scents and the first snow!

-Ashlin

Hot drinks & comfort food! 😋

How cute are these customized glasses? Made by our very own Sara!

Ugh! NOT pumpkin spice everything! 🙄

Summer is my jam, I have no idea why people love fall, I think this is an excellent question! 😉 But if I must…I love Thanksgiving. I find it to be a fun, more relaxed start to the stressful holiday season. I like reusing our Halloween pumpkins for decor. I like my kids bringing in acorns and sticks and leaves and wanting to “decorate” the table. I LOVE turkeys made out of drawing your hand! I like everyone laying around after eating and watching a movie and napping and days that last all day and into the night and through multiple meals. Those are my favorite kind of days.

-Tracy

Processed with VSCO with a6 preset

Ha, Tracy! I definitely agree with you – I love summer because I don’t have to worry about layering on as much!

But I do love fall because the changing of the leaves and being able to be outside without breaking out in a sweat. I’m not a huge pumpkin flavored type of person, but I love being able to try warmer foods like warm apple pies, hot tea/cider, etc.

-Cassie

Processed with VSCO with a6 preset

I won’t lie and you can call me basic, but I love the holiday drinks at Starbucks! Peppermint mochas are where it’s at! I like getting to see all the leaves change colors on the UMD campus. I also love getting to wear cozy flannels and big sweaters. I am all about sweater weather!

-Melanie

Why did you decide to join this company?

People are seeking unique experiences and community and I wanted to offer a space in Old Town where friends and family can gather to relax, create, mingle, AND leave with a piece of art that they proudly made themselves. AR Workshop offers hands-on classes for creating custom home décor in a lounge style atmosphere. In the heart of Old Town Alexandria, our charming loft-style lounge is the perfect venue for a fun and unique Girl’s Night Out, Corporate Team Building Activity, Fundraiser, Birthday Celebration, Date Night, Moms Morning Out and Kids Parties and Camps. Our class offerings include customized wood plank or framed signs, lazy susans, wood centerpiece boxes, canvas pillows, and canvas wall hangings, and so much more! Our retail shop offers a selection of on-trend home décor gifts and accessories.

What is your favorite part about what you do?

I love wearing all the hats and having my hands in every aspect of my business. From growing our brand and meeting and partnering with other local businesses, to teaching workshops, to curating and buying products for our retail shop. I also love our cozy studio and being in the heart of Old Town Alexandria. There’s a lot of good vibes, energy, and laughter coming out of these walls and seeing the happy and proud faces (of all ages) and projects leaving our studio will never get old.

Do you have a favorite story related to your business that you’d like to share?

We are a part of the Old Town Boutique District, which features over 30 unique shops showcasing one-of-a-kind items and hard-to-find brands. We recently participated in the District’s Shop & Stroll event where shoppers visit each boutique to win prizes and the grand prize winner gets a HUGE shopping spree, along with a 50% off coupon to use at ANY boutique. Of all the boutiques the winner could choose to spend their 50% off coupon, they chose AR Workshop. Having only opened our doors 8 months ago and being a ‘newbie’ to the District, that was a great compliment and honor.

Does your company provide additional services that you’d like people to know about?

We are hosting many different creative workshops at our studio and creating a community where you can learn a new craft and skill — Upcoming workshops include Hand Lettering, Watercolor, and Floral Arranging. All being taught by other local DC Artists. So many more to come….

Is there anything you’d like our readers to know about you personally?

I’m a corporate mom turned creative entrepreneur and small business owner in her 40’s. It’s a daily struggle to balance being a mom, wife, and business owner. It’s chaotic, it’s not pretty, it gets done, it takes a village. But, I’ve never been more professionally fulfilled and happy. I’m doing what I’m supposed to be doing right now.

District Bliss Networking Tips: How to Nail Your Next Networking Event!

Networking. Dun, dun, duuuuuun.

Networking can be terrifying. You’re entering into a room full of strangers hoping to leave with brand new connections. So whether you’re searching for the in to your dream job or looking to make quality connections with new friendors, putting yourself out there takes practice! The District Bliss team has put together a list of our top networking secrets of success. We want you to feel prepared, confident and ready to own any networking event!

TIP 1: Be authentic. Everyone wants to know you care about what they are saying. And, actually care! 😉
TIP 2: Ask questions about the people you’re talking with. We all like to talk about ourselves; try not to talk too much about yourself and focus on the person you’re talking with.

TIP 3: Wear something memorable. I cant count the number of times I’ve left an event and said, “I really loved hearing about [name]’s business! Did you meet him/her? (S)he was wearing that geometric shirt and colorful pants,” or had someone remember me for wearing a bright yellow dress. There are so many people who are terrible with names – and faces – but those people will remember what you were wearing!

TIP 4: Have fun, smile, and be happy! Positivity is contagious and people around you can sense your mood. (This is especially important if the event is being photographed — seriously! As a photographer, I cannot stress that enough! It’s so sad when someone looks unhappy in a great photo!)
-Sara, District Bliss Co-Founder

TIP 5: Be early! I am almost always awkwardly early everywhere I go. But when it comes to networking, it pays to be the first one in the room.  You don’t have to choose who to approach or make your way into a conversation, the next people to arrive are naturally going to gravitate to you and introduce themselves. Boom! Networking with very little effort!

-Tracy, DC Blissbassador

TIP 6: Ask open ended questions!  This way, the conversation does not end with a simple yes or no to your question.

TIP 7: Remember as many people’s names as possible that you meet, so you can address them personally when you see them again in the future. Obviously, this is easier when you collect business cards!

-Brittany, VA Blissbassador

TIP 8: Be an active listener! There’s nothing more frustrating when you’re speaking with someone and they seem very disinterested (e.g. looking around the room, not making eye contact, etc.) When you’re an active listener, you building a rapport with that individual which can lead to a meaningful relationship!

TIP 9: After a networking event, follow up with those individuals no later than three days! While those individuals are fresh in your mind and you have their business cards, reach out to them thanking them for their time, bring up a point or topic that you two discussed so that they’re able to remember you, and be proactive about meeting up with them to discuss further partnerships! If they don’t respond within a week or two, follow up again!

-Cassie, DIY Blissbassador

TIP 10: Take notes! If you’re talking to a lot of people, chances are it may be harder to remember all the awesome things you discussed with your new connections! Bring a pen + a small notebook to jot down any key points or things you’d like to remember about the person/conversation when you follow up with them! You can even write on the back of their business card!

-Melanie, District Bliss Unicorn + Assistant

Happy Networking!
