Happy Martin Luther King Jr Day!

“We will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream.”

Photograph by Ron Cogswell

Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day! Martin Luther King Jr. Day is observed every third Monday of January and this year it falls on his actual birthday! King would have been 89 years old.

While MLK is most famously known for his historical “I Have a Dream” speech, which was delivered at the March on Washington on August 28, 1963, here are some other things you may want to know!

  1. Dr. King was the president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference or SCLC.
  2. Dr. King was jailed almost 30 times. (But that didn’t stop him!)
  3. Dr. King attended Morehouse College in Atlanta at age 15 (AGE 15!) (Source: Biography)
  4. Dr. King was assassinated in Memphis, TN on the balcony of his motel by James Earl Ray.
  5. The Martin Luther King Memorial is right here in D.C and was sculpted by Chinese artist, Master Lei Yixin.
Source: Wikipedia

Today, we honor a true civil rights hero. MLK was a figure of hope, leadership, and peaceful protest, which paved the way to life-altering legislation such as “the creation of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965” (Source: Biography). In a time of segregation, racial injustice, and inequality, MLK dedicated his life to activism and fighting against discrimination.

Unfortunately, these issues are still far from resolved despite the progress our country has made. We still look to the words and actions of MLK as we continue to combat against racial injustice and inequality. We must keep moving forward, NOT backwards. We are all human and should treat each other as such. In these divisive times, we must stand together.

In the words of MLK, “I say to you today, my friends, that in spite of the difficulties and frustrations of the moment, I still have a dream.”

We hope everyone has a great day off and takes some time to reflect and honor a man whose life was dedicated to bringing equality and peace for all.

Happy New Year! Cheers to 2018!

Happy New Year party peeps! We’re a week into 2018 & we hope everyone is having a great start to the new year! Thank you so much for all the support in 2017 and we can’t wait to show you what we have in store for this year! Keep on pushing and keep on fighting to reach your goals. So whether it’s eating healthier or getting that dream job, shoot for the stars! Dream big, work hard, and take a chance! Anything is possible.

My New Years resolutions:

  1. Spend more time with people that have a positive influence on my life.
  2. Purge unnecessary clutter.
  3. Making time for exercising.
  4. Trying new recipes!

My New Years resolution is always to strive to do better than the year before, whatever that may mean…have more fun, enjoy my work more, work harder, smarter and network more!

-Tracy, DC Blissbassador

To paint the mural in my office and bring the outdoors in! It’s bringing the outside in and it will have sort of a nod to the Great Wave with a combination of abstract combination of water, land/mountains, and clouds/sky!

My New Years Resolution is to try and stay more present. I think I get over stressed about things that are going to happen in the future or get stuck in the past, which is not healthy for me both physically and mentally. I am hoping to stay more aware with what is currently in front of me and appreciate these instances and people who are there supporting me!

-Cassie, DIY Blissbassador

My new years resolution is to do more squats, get into grad school (fingers crossed!), and work towards landing my first full-time job!

DIY RECAP: DIY Biz Branding + Holiday Decor Workshop with AR Workshop Alexandria!

AR Workshop Alexandria is a boutique DIY Workshop offering hands-on classes for creating custom home decor in a cozy lounge style atmosphere. Customize beautiful signage and home decor with colors and designs of your choice and enjoy a fun and crafty night out! District Bliss DIY got to team up with the talented Katie Nguyen Wells to host a DIY Business Branding + Holiday Decor workshop and it was amazing!

Read all about the experience from the District Bliss team plus check out photos of all the DIY-ers and our rad new decor!

Luckily, we get to return to AR Workshop for our DMV Vendor Social! If you missed out on the DIY, join us December 5th to check out this cute space, mix+mingle, plus participate in a fun mini DIY!

How was your experience at the DIY Workshop?

It was awesome! I didn’t really know what to expect, but everything about it was fun; if it was a challenge, it was exciting. If it was easy, it was fun. There were so many options that it was difficult to choose – and I loved everything everyone else created so much that I kind of wish I could take everything home haha

-Sara, Boss Lady/Co-Founder

The DB DIY Décor Workshop with AR Workshop was really fun! For me, it was a difficult decision in terms of what I wanted to create because of the number of options that were available. Since District Bliss does work with many small businesses within the DMV area,  we wanted the option for these businesses to create their business logos on their projects. Katie Nguyen, the owner of AR Workshop, was really great to work with. From start to finish, she was so accommodating and provided so many different suggestions to everyone in our group for ways to create our project. It was a three hour class which seems a little daunting but because everyone was talking with each other, it went by so fast. Plus, AR Workshop has a little shop you can peruse around while you’re waiting for your project to dry, which is a great added bonus when taking the workshop!
We can’t wait to work with Katie again for hopefully a next DIY Workshop!
– Cassie, DIY Blissbassador

I started out overwhelmed by choosing what project to do and not being a DIY kind of gal I was worried I might be overwhelmed all night. My need for rules and control also gets in the way of me enjoying  crafts (wow, I sound SO fun!!)! However, none of that was the case! I was given exactly enough instruction not to get overwhelmed and I had lots of rules to follow so I could make it exactly like it was supposed to look! There  is no chance of you coming away with a Pinterest fail! Phew! It was fun with little stress over messing up! I loved it!

Tracy, DC Blissbassador

This was a really enjoyable class, where everyone had the opportunity to create a unique piece for their home. I really enjoyed the hands on aspect of it all and how you got to build your piece from unfinished pieces of wood. I chose the round lazy susan with a monogram and my last name because I wanted a timeless piece that would work with a wide range of decor in my home.  In addition to the design of the lazy susan being universal, I choose a more neutral stain & paint combination, too. There were so many amazing color choices, this part was the hardest for me!
What I really liked about this unique DIY workshop experience is that it’s something you could easily do solo or with a group of friends, coworkers, family, etc.  I’m excited to continue spreading the word about AR and signing up for classes in the future!

-Brittany, VA Blissbassador

Unfortunately, I couldn’t be there but I’m so glad the team had a great time! The workshop looked like so much fun! Crafting with friends is always 100x more fun!

-Melanie, Assistant + Unicorn

Thank you Katie for being an amazing workshop leader!

We’re fallin for fall! Check out District Bliss’ favorite things about autumn!

For a while, we were pretty unsure whether or not fall was actually going to happen for us in the district, but finally, the weather is cooling down and we’re able to bust out cozy flannels and boots and watch as the leaves change colors. Fall has so many wonderful things to offer so we asked our team what their favorite things about this season are!

I love football, the mild temperatures, and the colors of the leaves as they change. I love soft socks and warm blankets, cuddling with my new puppy who is just learning what colder weather feels like and is continually confused when he steps out the door, and spending time with friends and family.

My favorite things about fall is the brisk weather, cozy scarves and blankets, fall scents and the first snow!

Hot drinks & comfort food! 😋

How cute are these customized glasses? Made by our very own Sara!

Ugh! NOT pumpkin spice everything! 🙄

Summer is my jam, I have no idea why people love fall, I think this is an excellent question! 😉 But if I must…I love Thanksgiving. I find it to be a fun, more relaxed start to the stressful holiday season. I like reusing our Halloween pumpkins for decor. I like my kids bringing in acorns and sticks and leaves and wanting to “decorate” the table. I LOVE turkeys made out of drawing your hand! I like everyone laying around after eating and watching a movie and napping and days that last all day and into the night and through multiple meals. Those are my favorite kind of days.

Processed with VSCO with a6 preset

Ha, Tracy! I definitely agree with you – I love summer because I don’t have to worry about layering on as much!

But I do love fall because the changing of the leaves and being able to be outside without breaking out in a sweat. I’m not a huge pumpkin flavored type of person, but I love being able to try warmer foods like warm apple pies, hot tea/cider, etc.

Processed with VSCO with a6 preset

I won’t lie and you can call me basic, but I love the holiday drinks at Starbucks! Peppermint mochas are where it’s at! I like getting to see all the leaves change colors on the UMD campus. I also love getting to wear cozy flannels and big sweaters. I am all about sweater weather!

What are your favorite things about fall? 😉

District Bliss Networking Tips: How to Nail Your Next Networking Event!

Networking. Dun, dun, duuuuuun.

Networking can be terrifying. You’re entering into a room full of strangers hoping to leave with brand new connections. So whether you’re searching for the in to your dream job or looking to make quality connections with new friendors, putting yourself out there takes practice! The District Bliss team has put together a list of our top networking secrets of success. We want you to feel prepared, confident and ready to own any networking event!

TIP 1: Be authentic. Everyone wants to know you care about what they are saying. And, actually care! 😉
TIP 2: Ask questions about the people you’re talking with. We all like to talk about ourselves; try not to talk too much about yourself and focus on the person you’re talking with.

TIP 3: Wear something memorable. I cant count the number of times I’ve left an event and said, “I really loved hearing about [name]’s business! Did you meet him/her? (S)he was wearing that geometric shirt and colorful pants,” or had someone remember me for wearing a bright yellow dress. There are so many people who are terrible with names – and faces – but those people will remember what you were wearing!

TIP 4: Have fun, smile, and be happy! Positivity is contagious and people around you can sense your mood. (This is especially important if the event is being photographed — seriously! As a photographer, I cannot stress that enough! It’s so sad when someone looks unhappy in a great photo!)
-Sara, District Bliss Co-Founder

TIP 5: Be early! I am almost always awkwardly early everywhere I go. But when it comes to networking, it pays to be the first one in the room.  You don’t have to choose who to approach or make your way into a conversation, the next people to arrive are naturally going to gravitate to you and introduce themselves. Boom! Networking with very little effort!

-Tracy, DC Blissbassador

TIP 6: Ask open ended questions!  This way, the conversation does not end with a simple yes or no to your question.

TIP 7: Remember as many people’s names as possible that you meet, so you can address them personally when you see them again in the future. Obviously, this is easier when you collect business cards!

-Brittany, VA Blissbassador

TIP 8: Be an active listener! There’s nothing more frustrating when you’re speaking with someone and they seem very disinterested (e.g. looking around the room, not making eye contact, etc.) When you’re an active listener, you building a rapport with that individual which can lead to a meaningful relationship!

TIP 9: After a networking event, follow up with those individuals no later than three days! While those individuals are fresh in your mind and you have their business cards, reach out to them thanking them for their time, bring up a point or topic that you two discussed so that they’re able to remember you, and be proactive about meeting up with them to discuss further partnerships! If they don’t respond within a week or two, follow up again!

-Cassie, DIY Blissbassador

TIP 10: Take notes! If you’re talking to a lot of people, chances are it may be harder to remember all the awesome things you discussed with your new connections! Bring a pen + a small notebook to jot down any key points or things you’d like to remember about the person/conversation when you follow up with them! You can even write on the back of their business card!

-Melanie, District Bliss Unicorn + Assistant

Happy Networking!

Guest Speaker

Warren Hartenstine | Entrepreneur, International Business Owner

Business-Building Tips with Warren Hartenstine!

Our event featured a special guest speaker, Warren Hartenstine! Not only is he an entreprenuer and international business owner, he’s also the dad of our very own Sara Alepin, co-founder of district Bliss!

Warren has spent most of his life climbing the entrepreneurial ladder from sweeping at a blouse factory as an adolescent to regional manager to corporate VP to the US president of an international company.

After selling his company, Warren founded a management consulting firm focusing on maximizing market development and has contributed to the global performance of companies around the world in countries such as Canada, Germany, and China!

He joined fellow creatives to give his tips on building a successful business! Read up on Warren’s insightful advice and remember survive + drive = thrive!

Who is your best customer?

  1. You
  2. Colleagues – Empowerment multiples capacity. Instead of one linear set of thinking, most happy associates give their best to the cause and multiply the organization’s value to the market.  Two examples:
    • “If you accept being 2nd best anywhere, you will become second best everywhere.”
    • Take advantage of spouse’s health insurance.
  3. Network – Safest feedback and best ‘neutral’ consultive and sales network you will ever have.
  4. Consumers – Your expanded capacity will add value to every relationship & improve your performance

A few thoughts about underlying core values

  1. Golden Thread – Look insider yourself to recognize the difference between the bad things and the good values and cling to the good in everything you do, even in the most difficult situations.
  2. Negative Feedback – Several = critical examination but the best are most affected when they get their first. Everyone does!  Listen, embrace, understand & remediate.  One way: engage with the reviewer.
  3. Survive + Drive = Thrive. But always holding on to that universal Golden Thread.
  4. Self Value & Discounts – Unknown territory with unknown bottom.
    1. Depreciates how you feel about self and your product or service.
    2. Acceptance scars your feeling and therefore the delivery for the customer.
    3. The entire market suffers de-valuation and negative pressure when even one accepts a discounted arrangement. Jon Donne:  When a clod falls into the see, Is not Europe diminished?
  5. Remember to empower yourself and every layer of customer to get the optimum strength and energy.
